Avex Air Training (Pty) Ltd. was founded in the early 1960's as a flying training organisation. In the ensuing years it became one of South Africa's largest general aviation companies. It owned/operated more than sixty aircraft involved in flying training, charter, crop spraying, aerial survey, maintenance and aircraft sales.The 1980's saw the beginning of Avex's diversification. Avex became a distributor of technical information and standards products. Avex represents such diverse entities as Aerad Flight Guides, Jeppesen Navigation Products, Jane's Information Group, United States FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Aircraft Technical Publishers, and Information Handling Services.
Avex continued to diversify in the 1990's when the tool division was founded. Avex Tools has become a leading distributor of aerospace tool products on behalf of companies such as U.S Air Tool Company, Eastern Technologies, Cooper Tools, and Recoules. In addition, Avex supplies the motor assembly and allied industries with specialised torque control assembly line production equipment from Cooper Tools. General engineering requirements are met through distribution of product lines such as Cromwell Tools, Geta, Apex, Allen, Armstrong, Gear-Wench, Norbar, CiLight, and Bianditz etc.The operations and management of aircraft on behalf of individuals and companies has become a growing part of Avex business in the new millennium. The company has also acquired a shareholding in Premier Bolt and Engineering Supplies (Pty) Ltd and Phambile Fasteners (Pty) Ltd.
Avex's administrative head office is in Spartan (Kempton Park). Other branches/flying operations are conducted at Sebenza (Edenvale), Newton Park (Port Elizabeth), Grand Central Airport (Midrand), Rand Airport (Germiston), and Johannesburg International Airport.
The directors of the company are: D.C Chandler, C.E Chandler, D.J Nasmith, R.M Chandler and I.J Steer.
